When Andrew was young, his favorite book was 'The Rainbow Fish' by Marcus Pfister. He was drawn to the colorful illustrated fish scales in the story. His parents got really good at reading this one at bedtime.
Andrew is now giving a vivid childhood memory the Flytanium Treatment. And what better place to apply this than our new milled titanium fish scales?
A Long Way Out in the Deep Blue Sea...
For Andrew, 'The Rainbow Fish' book lives in his head rent free. The bright colors. The shiny silver scales that offset the red, blue, green, and purple ones. Even after a couple decades, it is still so clear in his mind.
That's why the idea and the pieces necessary to make it happen all waded together perfectly.
He said, "When I machined the fish scale pattern onto the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 scales, I was considering which anodizing color combinations I could do. The Rainbow Fish was right there. It felt so natural."
Not only is it incredibly nostalgic for him, but it is also a fun new anodizing challenge. "I was intrigued by the possibility and really wanted to see how it would turn out. I like the idea of bringing sentiment, art, and intrigue to life through projects like this. The milled scales on an iconic knife made the perfect platform for the Rainbow Fish to do just that."
If you're not familiar, the book tells about a brightly colored fish that would rather show off his scales than share them with anyone else. He eventually changes his ways, but it takes a while.
Andrew — and Flytanium as a whole — are the exact opposite. In fact, we've been working hard to do both. Create unique and customizable knives, parts, tools, accessories, and other EDC items that we can bring to the knife world for everyone to have.
That's us in a clam shell.
