Our Secret Getaway
Each year, my wife and I never miss the chance to take a quick trip to Kanab, Utah. We spent last weekend hanging out down there.
We normally spend most of the time in the Kanab area, exploring trails and trying out restaurants. During this particular getaway, we decided to spend one of the days about 30 miles northwest at Zion National Park.
I've lived in Utah for most of my life, but this was the first time I've been to this iconic spot. I'm glad we broke routine.
A Day Trip to Zion
Once we arrived in Zion, we weaved our way through the visitor center and grabbed a shuttle. We jumped off at stop #6 and made our way to the West Rim Trail, near Angels Landing. TL;DR — It was absolutely beautiful, almost otherworldly at times.
Days before, when I was packing for the trip, I made sure to grab my favorite colorway of BEEF. I knew for some reason I'd need it later.
Aside from whittling wood sticks at Jackson Flat Reservoir and fidgeting with the knife during down time, it came in clutch on a super hot day.
We both packed hydration for the planned hikes, but my wife's backpack wasn't fit properly to get the drinking tube and mouthpiece out to her shoulder strap.
We realized this at the trailhead before we set off. Good thing I brought my trusty EDC.
Holes in a Backpack
In order to convert her backpack to a hydration pack, I cut a one-inch hole near the top of the bag for the drinking tube. Then I cut two lateral slits on top of the left shoulder strap, half an inch apart, so the tube could rest cleanly on her shoulder. I made the same cuts a few inches lower on the strap so the drinking tube didn't swing around all over as she walked.
It was a solid solution in a pinch, and the makeshift hydration pack kept her hydrated as we enjoyed a spectacular hike.
